Almenara

While the town in its current shape and form and its name are of Arabic origin, traces of the Iberian, Roman and Islamic civilizations have also been found. Almenara was an extremely important Roman port. In 1238 James I laid siege to Almenara as a strategic point from which to conquer Valencia. It was at the head of a county made up of Quart, Quartell, Benavites, Chilches and La Llosa. It was also a strategic point in later battles, including the War of Independence and the Civil War.

Economy

The main economic activity in the present day is in the services industry, followed by agriculture, primarily citrus fruits, with many major citrus fruit factories located here. Other activities include construction and manufacturing, albeit to a lesser extent.

What to see

Almenara's origins lie at the foot of the castle and its urban structure has a perfectly fortified grid pattern, with angles flanked by four towers and a further two in the centre, which over time have been outgrown by buildings outside the walls, forming neighbourhoods that were then annexed. The ruins of the castle are situated extremely close to the old town.

Landscape

With a Mediterranean climate and varied terrains, from mountains to marshlands, lagoons, beaches and coastline, the municipality has an altitude of 26 m. The town centre is situated at the foot of the castle, surrounded by citrus orchards. It has a number of unspoilt natural areas, both in the mountains and on the coast, a highlight being the Almenara Marshland.
