The village was founded in Roman times, in 201 AD. On June 14, 1297, Zaragoza issued a royal decree to promote the village to the status of Villa Real (“Royal town”), and the village became part of the Barony of Chilches on February 13, 1306. Important findings from ancient civilizations can be found in the village, including a mile marker which demonstrates that the Via Augusta passed through Chilches, a bronze statue of Mercury, and silver and gold Arab coins dating from the 3rd century AD.

Economy

The economy in Chilches consists of manufacturing and large-scale trade of produce, chemicals, electrical components (especially circuits), tiles, and ceramics.

What to see

Within the town center, make sure to visit the church, Alfonso XIII plaza, and the pedestrian Calle Arbelló, known for its beauty and charm. Plaza España is home to the Town Hall, Abadía House, Parish Church (dating from the Roman era), and the De la Unión fountain.

Landscape

Chilches’ surroundings include mountainous landscapes to the west, orange plantations in the south and north, and marshes to the east. The village rises 7 meters above sea level, and the typically Mediterranean climate is pleasant. Take a long stroll or cycle through Chilches’ marshlands, where you will find winter fauna in colder months, and hike through its splendid mountains.
