Penyagolosa Ice-Boxes

Villahermosa del Río

Penyagolosa Ice-Box

The ice trade began well before it was ever artificially made. Thus, it had to be stored wherever there wasn’t much snow. The basis of this trade was the construction of enormous deposits in the highest places near areas where there was plenty of snow.

There are several ice-boxes in the municipal area of Villahermosa del Río, all near Penyagolosa.

Their diameters range from 6 to 16 metres. They have an excavated well and a considerably thick wall to close them. Two of them are in ruins; the most well-known is the one that’s in the best conditions.
