Old Quarter

Artana

The old quarter of Artana is well worth a serene visit. The layout is clearly Muslim with narrow streets that twist and turn from the church. Reaching the higher part, the different neighbourhoods begin to show their own charm: old houses with whitewashed walls and blue windows, cobbled streets and fresh fountains, beautiful views of the town and, what’s most interesting, the infinity of colourful tiled capelletes (religious niches) on the walls all over dedicated to different saints and virgins who are, in the end, the most vigilant patrons of the town, looking after the locals in their own quiet way. Also noteworthy in the historic centre are several popular modernist style houses, some well worth having a look at.
