Ruins and remains of the Bronze Age and the Iberian period. It has a modest history until James I's Reconquest. It becomes a hugely important place during the 18th Century, as a stronghold during the Wars of Independence and the Carlist Wars. It heads the Judicial District.

Landscape

The landscape is craggy, with deep ravines and steep mountains. It has a mid-mountain climate, with not overly cold winters and moderate summers. From the peak of Figueres (370 m) to the foothills of the Penyagolosa massif (1300 m), it spans around 12 km as the crow flies.
