Its origin is marked by Polpis castle, whose territory was donated by Alfonso II to the Order of the Temple in 1189. After the Reconquest, James I cedes it to the Order of Calatrava. It is granted a Town Charter in 1287 by the Master of the Knights Templar. It is then ruled by the Order of Montesta, and in contemporary times it becomes part of the municipality of Alcalà de Xivert, before being declared an independent municipality in 1812.
