The Oven and Wool Market

Ла-Мата-де-Морелья

This building used for an oven was first a wood market. The structure of the building remains intact.  The top floor, where the town hall is located, is situated over the old market. The main entrance to the building is through the Plaza de la Iglesia (church square). The structure features several large-size pointed arches.  The ring once used to hang the steelyard to weigh the wool still hangs from a lower arch. Due to its privileged location bordering the provinces of Teruel and Castellón, the wool trade was quite active in La Mata. Later on, the market was used as a community oven where all the villagers would bake their bread.  Therefore, it was a meeting place and continues to be such as the restaurant Mesón del Forn is now located there.
