Throughout its history, Oropesa del Mar, with its strategic location, has been a major attraction for a number of cultures. There is evidence of Palaeolithic and Iberian settlements. In 1233 James I conquered the castle which crowns the upper part of this picturesque town. During the reign of Philip II, the imposing King's Tower (Torre del Rey) was built in response to numerous attacks by pirates.

Economy
The main economic activity is tourism, in all of its guises. This is followed by agriculture.

What to see
Explore the interesting old town, visiting the ruins of the old walls and the Arabic castle, the Virgen de la Paciencia hermitage and the antique dealers' quarter (Ciudad de los Anticuarios). Walk along the seafront promenade by the port, the King's Tower and the pedestrian walkway that connects the beaches of La Concha and Morro de Gos. Enjoy strolling around the Gardens in Marina D'Or, where you will find a wealth of different vegetation and modern architecture.

Landscape
There are a variety of landscapes on the coast of Oropesa: vast, open beaches in the north; bays, like the one where the La Concha beach is located; and steep cliffs, coves and pine groves in the southern part, such as at the beach of La Renegà.
