Cova dels Rossegadors o del Polvorí

La Pobla de Benifassà

The visit to these interesting paintings is always previously booked by tel: +34 977 729 036 - +34 977 729 051 or directly at the La Pobla de Benifassá Tourist Office (C/ Mayor, 10)

These paintings are located in the surroundings of the Parc Natural de la Tinença de Benifassá, in the Rossegadors ravine close to the Senia River. 40 m. above the river, facing the East and next to the road. The paintings were discovered in 1947 when the Ulldecona reservoir was built using the cave such as Polvorín, the name by which the cave is also known. It is an excellent place for observation and hunting of animals that would come to the river to drink. With more than 50 human figures and 30 animal figures, the hunting scenes stand out, with human figures and archers, as well as representations of isolated animals: goats, deer, wild boars and birds. A female figure with a skirt surrounded by male figures reminds us perhaps of a worship scene like the one we find in the Cova Remígia. They are painted with red pigments.

Access: Along the CV-105 road from La Sénia and past the Molí l'Abad tourist complex, and a few hundred metres before the tunnel and the reservoir, take a signposted access on the right.

This municipality groups the towns of El Bellestar, Fredes, El Boixar, Coratxà, and Pobla de Benifassà itself. These lands have a special microclimate, which together with the altitude, form a wild and spectacular landscape with a unique flora of beech or juniper among other species and a fauna with the National Reserve of the Spanish goat. With these premises, the Tinença de Benifassà, declared a Natural Park in a large part of its territory, is a wonderful place to go hiking through the extensive network of approved trails and thus come into contact with an almost untouched nature discovering unique places such as the Barranco de la Tenalla, the Barranco de la Fou, the Pi Gros, the Retaule, the Salt de Robert, the Portell del Infern, etc. But apart from natural places of interest La Pobla de Benifassà, El Bellestar, Fredes, El Boixar and Coratxà have an important historical legacy that they try to maintain in their chapels, churches and houses of rich popular architecture. However, the Real Monasterio Cisterciense de Santa María de Benifassà is the true artistic jewel of this area. The monastery was quite destroyed after the Carlist Wars of the 19th century and has recently been carefully reconstructed, thus returning the Gothic church, cloister, towers, etc. to their former splendour.

Visit to the Monastery only on Thursdays from 13:00 - 15:00.
