Walls and Old Quarter

Eslida

Nowadays, there are only 4 gateways standing along the wall: Portal Viejo, Portal Nuevo, Teixidors and Virgen de los Dolores.

These gateways have a medieval look with narrow and labyrinthine alleys full of nooks and portals with semi-circular arches that proclaim the strength of the time.

The old town is made up of narrow, twisted and very steep streets much like an Arab medina; these streets are adorned with flowerpots and ornamental plants.

The most typical and oldest streets are: l’Arrendador, San Isidro, El Salvador, San Ramón, la Del Porxet, la Dels Teixidors, Portal Vell and Carrer de Baix. Carrer de Baix marks the boundary of the old quarter, thus leading into the successive extensions of the town centre with wider streets and a more regular layout that spread like a mantle towards the valley, the central axis of which is the street Calle San León (St. Leo is the patron saint of Eslida).
