Horno de Cal (limekiln)

Sierra Engarcerán

This type of oven was used to extract lime from stone. Rather than lighting it all the time, the residents only used it when the need arose. Its main use was in the construction of buildings, however it was also used in the painting and whitewashing of house façades on special occasions, such as the town’s patron saint celebrations.

There are more than 60 limekilns in this town.

This limekiln was part of the public domain, that is to say, it belonged to the town council, who would claim a portion of the lime every time the kiln was used.
